Balls of Fury is a hybrid challenge of logical intelligence and physical intelligence on Canada's Smartest Person.
Description[]
Retrieved from CBC.ca
Participants enter a wind chamber filled with 250 balls. To start the challenge they must rely on their hand-eye coordination and lightning-fast reflexes to grab nine numbered red balls out of mid-air and place them onto the equation grid. Once all nine balls have been collected, they must settle their nerves, shift gears and rely on their logical intelligence to solve three mathematical equations.
Logical intelligence is all about tackling problems systematically. These include abstract problems involving numerical relationships.
This challenge is suited for people who can focus and react in high-pressure situations, like fighter pilots or hockey goaltenders.[1]
Episode 201[]
Balls of Fury was the sole hybrid challenge, representing logical intelligence and physical intelligence, and the fifth challenge overall. Jessi Cruickshank explained to the contestants that the contestant in 1st place would earn 10 overall points, the contestant in 2nd place would earn 6, the contestant in 3rd place would earn 4, and the contestant in last place would earn 2. She then explained to the viewers the instructions and how they could play along with the contestants on the Canada's Smartest Person app.
The equation grid consisted of a multiplication equation, an addition equation, and a subtraction equation. One of the possible equation sets was 2X11=22 (or 11X2=22), 7+9=16 (or 9+7=16), and 33-8=25 (or 33-25=8). The other possible equation set was 2X11=22 (or 11X2=22), 8+25=33 (or 25+8=33), and 16-7=9 (or 16-9=7).
Maya Burhanpurkar and Anthony Craparotta were the first contestants to take on this challenge. Anthony finished catching his red balls 50 seconds into the challenge and Maya finished catching hers 1 minute and 11 seconds into the challenge. Anthony correctly completed his equation grid and finished 1 minute and 16 seconds into the challenge. Finally, Maya correctly completed her equation grid and finished 1 minute and 26 seconds into the challenge, stopping it.
Jessica Joy and Richard Pinnock were the last contestants to take on this challenge. Jessica finished catching her red balls 57 seconds into the challenge and Richard, who tried to work on his grid as he was catching his red balls, finished catching his 1 minute and 19 seconds into the challenge. Jessica correctly completed her equation grid and finished 1 minute and 20 seconds into the challenge. However, Richard was unable to correctly complete his equation grid by the 1-minute-and-26-second mark, forcing him to stop.
As a result, Anthony was awarded 10 overall points for finishing in 1st place, Jessica was awarded 6 for finishing in 2nd place, Maya was awarded 4 for finishing in 3rd place, and Richard was awarded 2 for finishing in last place.
